How to Use These Materials
Above is the set of source materials that was created as the basis for the corresponding Podcasts and Booklets. All of these materials were created and processed using an Apple MacBook Pro. The relationship between these materials is:
- The set of slides (created using Microsoft PowerPoint for MacOS X) provide the basic visual materials. Jpeg versions of each slide were used to annotate each chapter within the Podcast. The images were also used in the booklets (only those images that were figures or tables). The physical shape of the slides is square because this geometry was imposed by GarageBand for the Podcast chapter images
- The Booklets were created using Adobe Indesign (CS4). This desk-top publishing application was used to integrate the slides (as jpeg images) with the scripts that were written for the six Podcasts (these scripts were edited from the audio versions to better fit the written presentation format). The Booklets were then exported as PDF files with Bookmarks and the appropriate file metadata entries. The EPUB forms of the booklets were also created by exporting from InDesign. Some manual editing of the EPUB files (an EPUB file is a collection of files zipped together) was required to improve the layout presentation on the the Sony PRS-505 eReader
- The Podcasts were developed using Garageband. Each session has its own GarageBand file. Each session is a set of sixteen chapters (one for each slide) with its own image marker. The script for each chapter was recorded directly into GarageBand. The MPEG4 files for the Podcasts were created through an export feature within GarageBand. The clarity (visual and audio) was tested using a 32GB Apple iTouch device.
